VIDRANK
YouTube allows up to 500 characters of tags per video — that is roughly 15–30 tags depending on length. There is no tag-count limit, only the character limit. The best number is however many relevant tags fit in ~400–480 characters, with your exact topic as tag #1.
How many tags can you have on YouTube? The honest answer surprises people: the limit is measured in characters, not tags. YouTube's Creator Studio gives every video a 500-character tag budget, and both a 10-tag list of long phrases and a 40-tag list of single words can hit it. Here is exactly how to spend that budget.
The 500-character limit, explained
- YouTube counts every character in the tag field, including commas and spaces.
- A typical phrase tag ("how to edit youtube videos") is 20–30 characters, so 500 characters holds about 15–25 phrase tags.
- Single-word tags ("gaming", "vlog") are 5–10 characters, so you could technically fit 50+ — and that is exactly how people end up with tag spam.
The best number of tags (not the maximum number)
The question "how many tags can you have" is the wrong question. The useful question is "how many tags help." YouTube's own guidance describes tags as a minor signal, useful mainly for misspellings, synonyms, and disambiguation. That maps to this budget:
| Slot | Count | What goes there | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 tag | Your exact topic, phrased as people search | how to edit youtube videos |
| 2 | 3–5 | Close variants and synonyms | youtube video editing, edit videos for youtube |
| 3 | 3–5 | Long-tail and question phrasings | how to edit youtube videos for free, best youtube editor for beginners |
| 4 | 2–3 | Common misspellings | youtube video edeting |
| 5 | 1–2 | Broad category anchors | youtube, video editing |
That is 10–16 tags for most videos — filling 350–480 of your 500 characters. If your topic genuinely has more distinct variants (a broad tutorial, for example), up to 30 tags is fine. Past that, you are adding noise.
What happens if you exceed 500 characters?
YouTube simply truncates the field — you cannot save more. The Studio counter turns red as you approach the limit. There is no penalty for using the full budget and no bonus for filling it: an irrelevant 40th tag dilutes your topic signal rather than adding one.
Signs your tag list is too long
- Half the list is single generic words (
fun, vlog, life, new). - Tags repeat the same idea with tiny variations (
youtube tags, youtube tag, tags youtube, youtube tags!). - Tags reference topics not actually in the video — that is against YouTube's tag policy and can get the metadata discounted entirely.
Copy this process instead
- Write your exact topic as tag #1.
- Open the free tag extractor, paste the URLs of the top 3 videos for your topic, and study their tag lists.
- Keep the variants that genuinely describe your video; add misspellings they missed.
- Stop at 15–30 tags or ~480 characters, whichever comes first.
- Check whether your position moved in 7 days with the YouTube rank checker method.
If you want the scoring done for you, VidRank generates a ranked tag set for your exact video and tells you which tags carry the most weight — no guessing about the character budget.
FAQ
How many tags should a YouTube Short have? The same 500-character limit applies. Shorts live or die on the swipe, so keep tags tight and relevant — the Shorts tag sets here are sized to fit.
Is 100 tags too many? The character limit makes 100 phrase tags impossible, and 100 single-word tags is pure noise. Both YouTube's guidance and every serious study of metadata agree: relevance beats volume.
Do tags matter as much as the title? No. Title and thumbnail CTR lead, watch time follows, tags are a supporting signal — most useful for misspellings and alternate phrasings your title cannot fit.
